Governor Wolf Announces Funding to Open First Bank Museum

September 28, 2018

Philadelphia, PA – Today, Governor Tom Wolf joined state and local leaders to celebrate the state’s support of the reopening of the First Bank of the United States in Philadelphia.

“Today, I am proud to be here to announce that the commonwealth has made a commitment to support the reopening of this historic landmark,” said Governor Wolf. “The state’s investment will help reopen the central bank that once served as the foundation to modern United States fiscal policy, into a museum.”

Philadelphia’s Independence National Historic Park contains numerous sites invaluable to our nation’s history, including Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell Center, and the First Bank of the United States. However, unlike the former two buildings, the First Bank of the United States is closed to the public and in need of repair. Independence Historical Trust was approved for a $8 million grant for the significant renovations and repairs necessary to help bring the First Bank of the United States up to code to reopen for the public.

“The First Bank restoration project won’t just restore an esteemed historic building. It will help to restore Philadelphia’s rightful place in the remarkable Alexander Hamilton story that has captured the nation’s curiosity and will aid our quest in supporting Independence National Historical Park as an essential place to visit to understand how our nation was born and flourished,” said Bill Marrazzo, Chairman of Independence Historical Trust. “We are so grateful that Governor Wolf saw the power of this project and awarded this grant.”

Supported through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP), funding will support critical expansion projects, some of which will provide opportunities for additional economic development.
