Governor Wolf Commends Pennsylvania Victory for Birth Control Access
December 15, 2017
Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today commended Attorney General Josh Shapiro and his legal team, who worked with the governor’s administration, for their victory in federal court to get a nationwide temporary injunction against the Trump administration’s move to allow some employers to opt-out of covering contraception for their employees:
“The decision by the Trump Administration to take women’s birth control decisions out of their hands and put them into the hands of their employers was flat-out wrong, and thanks to Attorney General Shapiro, working with my administration, a federal court has put a stop to this before any more women are disenfranchised,” Governor Wolf said. “This nationwide temporary injunction is a victory for all women in Pennsylvania and the country, and especially low-income women, who may not have been able to afford this important medication under the Trump administration’s draconian decision.”
In light of the Trump administration’s decision in October, Governor Wolf had called on the Pennsylvania General Assembly to step-up and address this on the state level. Both the Pennsylvania Insurance Department and Department of Human Services, working with the Governor’s Office of General Counsel, provided significant support to the Office of Attorney General.
