Governor Wolf Gives Keynote at Pennsylvania Conference for Women

October 12, 2018

Governor Tom Wolf today gave the luncheon keynote address to the Pennsylvania Conference for Women in Philadelphia. His remarks highlighted his commitment to supporting women, from closing the wage gap to supporting victims of abuse, to addressing rising maternal mortality and ensuring women’s health care rights are respected.

“I’ve made it a priority of my administration to do all that I can to protect and promote women’s rights and knock down any barriers that may hinder women’s abilities to reach their full potential,” Gov. Wolf said. “I have worked to make our commonwealth a place where Pennsylvania’s women know that their concerns and voices are heard and valued.”

Gov. Wolf outlined the initiatives he’s put in place to support women, including signing an executive order that will work to end discriminatory practices that contribute to the gender wage gap, creating a maternal mortality review committee to study how we can reduce these deaths in Pennsylvania, launched “It’s On Us,” the first statewide campaign to address the crisis of sexual assault in schools and on college campuses, and lauded the recent passage of legislation that requires people convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence or subject to final restraining orders to surrender their guns within 24 hours of the conviction.

Held for the second consecutive year in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Conference for Women attracts more than 12,000 women from across the commonwealth with featured speakers including Amal Clooney, Serena Williams, Samantha Barry, Ellen McGirt, and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.

The mission of the Conference for Women is to promote, communicate and amplify the influence of women in the workplace and beyond.

“We need more women in leadership positions,” Gov. Wolf said. “We need to close the pay gap. We need to eliminate gender discrimination – and to create workplaces that work for everyone. We need to support victims of abuse and we need to stand together in support of these goals.”
