First Lady Frances Wolf Brings New Photo Exhibit to Governor’s Residence
November 13, 2017
Harrisburg, PA – First Lady Frances Wolf today announced a new exhibition of photographs at the Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence. Where Hope Finds Home by Kristin V. Rehder and Amer Alfayadh documents the stories of refugees from all over the world who have resettled in Lancaster County.
“Since its founding, Pennsylvania has been a place of welcome, and our principles of providing refuge from persecution stand true to this day,” Mrs. Wolf said. “Tom and I are so thankful to Kristin, Amer, and all of the courageous people featured in these photographs for allowing us to bring this traveling exhibit to the Governor’s Residence – a place that is truly open to all.”
The project began in 2015-16, when over 60 Lancaster area refugees representing 19 countries agreed to be photographed and to tell their stories. The participants are legal immigrants who have passed rigorous entrance requirements to come to the United States. They were forced from their homelands and encampments because of a well-documented fear of persecution due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
“I am transformed by the integrity, public service, commitment to fairness, support of education, devotion to the arts and delight in family that the Governor and First Lady demonstrate to all of us each day,” Rehder said. “It is a great honor to show Where Hope Finds Home here at the Governor’s Residence galleries. In these 23 images we see people who were trained in their home countries as nurses, teachers, accountants, electricians, engineers, entrepreneurs, university professors, crane operators, ministers, accomplished artists. Because of persecution and human rights violations, all have given up so much to begin again. The power of love and fairness and the ability to look into the eyes of the other and to see the dignity, talent, and possibility in each human being is stronger than any negative force we face today.”
Where Hope Finds Home will remain on display at the Governor’s Residence through June 2018. Regular public tours will resume in April, May, and June of 2018. During the 2017 Holiday Season, the Governor’s Residence will be open for public tours on December 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Holiday tours are self-guided and reservations are not required.
