Gov. Wolf Recognizes Nurses at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center National Nurses Week Event

May 08, 2019

Hershey, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today toured Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Heart and Vascular Institute Critical Care Unit, meeting with nurses in those care areas and finishing the tour with remarks in support of all nurses.

“Since its inception, nursing has been critical to the health and well-being of patients,” Gov. Wolf said. “Nurses tend wounds, administer medication, check vitals, perform exams, counsel patients, provide a shoulder to cry on, and so, so much more.

“It’s an exhausting job, not just because some of you walk a marathon in a typical day, but because of the raw emotions you experience when you pour yourself into caring for another human being.”

“We are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with our SEIU nurses to give Gov. Wolf a firsthand look at the world-class patient care we provide in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is the highest-level NICU in central Pennsylvania, and our Heart and Vascular Institute Critical Care Unit,” said Deborah Berini, president of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

The governor also discussed his support for the collaborative labor management environment that exists at Hershey Medical Center.

“The positive atmosphere here is a sign of a great collaboration between nurses, other staff members and management,” Gov. Wolf said. “Nurses play an essential role in caring for patients and my administration supports them in all that they do.”

“Nurses Week is one week out of the year to celebrate our profession, but because of the strong collaboration we have with management through our union, nurses here at Hershey are empowered to have an active role in advancing quality patient care, and that level of respect makes us feel very valued all year,” said Maureen Casey, BSN RN, Peri-Anesthesia and SEIU HCPA Chapter President.

National Nurses Week is an annual recognition of the vast contributions and positive impact of America’s 4 million registered nurses. Each year, the celebration ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
