Governor Tom Wolf on the Price of the Opioid Epidemic

By: The Office of Governor Tom Wolf

October 13, 2016

We all pay the price for Pennsylvania’s opioid epidemic.

We pay for it in incarceration costs. It costs seven times as much to incarcerate someone as it does to treat that person.

We pay for it in an economy that doesn’t have those consumers. We pay for it in an economy that doesn’t have those people working good, productive jobs.

We pay for it in families that are broken up. Even if you are personally unaffected by Pennsylvania’s opioid epidemic, you are affected by what this means for our society.

In order to stem the tide of opioid abuse and make progress for those suffering from the disease of addiction and their loved ones, we must work quickly and efficiently to pass bills to send to Governor Wolf’s desk.
