Governor Wolf Announces Improvements to Academic Facilities of Thiel College, Mercer County

August 30, 2018

Harrisburg, PA – Today, Governor Tom Wolf announced new funding to make improvements to academic facilities at Thiel College, a key educator and employer in Mercer County.

“The academic facility improvements will enhance the educational and training options at Thiel College, increasing the reasons why students who choose a post-secondary education in Pennsylvania are given every opportunity to forge a path toward a successful future,” Governor Wolf said.

Thiel College was approved for a $1 million grant to make improvements to laboratories, classrooms, and common areas in the Academic Center, the largest academic facility on the college’s Greenville campus. The small liberal arts college plans to expand academic offerings in key industries with strong employment demand, including an environmental safety program in the regionally growing oil and gas industry. In addition to fulfilling the Wolf Administration’s commitment to strengthening Pennsylvania’s workforce through education and training, the upgrades to Thiel College will directly create approximately 10 jobs in a designated Act 47 community.

“Returns from this investment will reach far beyond the campus,” Representative Mark Longietti said. “Thiel College is a driving force for the local economy and the entire region. The new center’s enhanced resources – including expanded STEM training that’s so vital to today’s high-skill jobs – will help fortify our manufacturing industry and allow it to keep pace with changes in the global market. At the same time, as our area economy expands to include the health and education fields, the new academic center will help meet those demands by providing expanded research facilities and new programs of study.”

“As a vital educational and economic resource, Thiel’s value to the community far transcends its strong academic reputation,” Senator Michele Brooks said. “This support is destined to increase student enrollment, foster partnerships with medical and industrial leaders, and enhance the college’s ability to endure as a vibrant regional partner.”

Supported through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP), funding will support critical expansion projects, some of which will provide opportunities for additional economic development.
