Governor Wolf Announces New Apprenticeships for Clinical Research, Residential Electricians

Harrisburg, PA – Continuing to expand opportunities for Pennsylvanians to get the hands-on training and skills to compete in the 21st century economy, Governor Tom Wolf announced today the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry has approved new apprenticeships programs in the clinical research associate (CRA) and residential electrician occupations.
“Apprenticeships are key for many people to get the skills for good jobs in expanding industries,” said Governor Wolf. “These new apprenticeship programs are great examples of how my innovative PAsmart initiative will connect people with the training they need for in-demand jobs.”
Pharmaceutical Product Development, LLC (PPD), headquartered in Wilmington, North Carolina, recently registered an individual non-joint apprenticeship program in Pennsylvania for the clinical research associate (CRA) occupation. This 12-month competency-based program is a first in the United States. It will be utilized in PPD’s Blue Bell location.
“Creating this apprenticeship increases the pipeline of successful professionals into the CRA talent pool, which is an important segment of employees for contract research organizations,” said Tim Neathery, vice president of global recruitment for PPD. “We are excited for the opportunity to bring this program to Pennsylvania.”
IBEW Allentown Electricians JATC 375 recently registered a new trade addition, Residential Electrician, which will be a three-year program including time in both classrooms and labs. The apprentices will spend time in the union’s Training Center, featuring the latest in electrical service technologies. IBEW Allentown Electricians registered their group-joint apprenticeship program in 1945 with an Electrician occupation, that currently has 94 active apprentices.
“Apprenticeship programs are a key function for Local 375. We are committed to meeting the strong demand for top-quality electricians schooled in fiber-optics and other advanced technologies, as well as more traditional electrical delivery modes,” said IBEW 375 Training Director Robert Franklin. “Our commitment to these apprenticeship programs has enabled Local 375 to fulfill this demand and further spread the message that IBEW members provide the highest quality service and value in the industry.”
“Apprenticeship programs highlight the importance of state agencies and local businesses working together to meet regional employment needs,” said L&I Secretary Jerry Oleksiak. “Targeted funding from the PAsmart initiative invests $7 million to expand apprenticeships in traditional and non-traditional occupations, including youth pre-apprenticeship and registered apprenticeships at high schools and career and technical centers, with a goal of doubling the number of registered apprentices in the state by 2025.”
The new apprenticeship programs were approved by the department’s Apprenticeship and Training Office (ATO), which the Wolf administration established in 2016 to support and expand registered apprenticeship programs statewide. The office provides outreach, education, and technical support to current and prospective apprenticeship program sponsors and apprentices.
Under the Wolf administration, the ATO has registered 115 new sponsors and 166 new apprenticeship programs or occupations, bringing the total number of registered apprentices to 15,972 statewide.
Apprenticeship programs approved by the ATO provide employer-driven training to create a more productive, diverse, highly-skilled workforce for employers and help reduce employee turnover. The program provides job seekers with increased skills, and a nationally recognized credential to support future career advancement and increased wages.
