Governor Wolf: New Apprenticeships for Electrician, Carpentry, Plumbing, and HVAC Technician Careers in the Harrisburg Area

Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf announced today new apprenticeship opportunities in several trades with the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Metropolitan Harrisburg. These efforts underscore the governor’s commitment to expand apprenticeships, increase the skilled workforce and attract more businesses to Pennsylvania.

“Businesses need more skilled trades workers and apprenticeships are a great way for people to earn a paycheck while learning on the job,” said Governor Wolf. “These are good jobs that can support a family and strengthen Pennsylvania’s 21st century economy.”

Apprenticeships are a key component of Governor Wolf’s PAsmart initiative, a new and innovative way to improve coordination between state agencies, cut red tape, and invest in people and business to expand innovative job training in apprenticeships and other programs so workers get the skills they need to compete in the global economy.

The HBA of Metropolitan Harrisburg recently registered a group non-joint apprenticeship program for Residential Electrician, Residential Carpentry, Residential Plumbing, and Residential HVAC Technician occupations. The apprenticeship program will partner with HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, to provide the technical instruction.

“Apprenticeship provides the housing industry with a valuable tool to attract and train its future workforce with its ‘earn while you learn’ approach,” said David Sheppard, Jr., CAE, Executive Vice President of Home Builders Association of Metro Harrisburg. “It is a way of training that is centuries old, but so contemporary in meeting today’s workforce needs.”

“Apprenticeship programs highlight the importance of state agencies and local businesses working together to train job seekers for careers in growing industries,” said Labor & Industry Secretary Jerry Oleksiak. “Governor Wolf’s PAsmart initiative will invest $7 million in apprenticeships to expand programs in traditional and non-traditional occupations, with a goal of doubling the number of registered apprentices in Pennsylvania by 2025.”

The Wolf Administration established the Apprenticeship and Training Office (ATO) in the Department of Labor & Industry in 2016 to support and expand registered apprenticeship programs statewide. The office provides outreach, education, and technical support to current and prospective apprenticeship program sponsors and apprentices.

Since the ATO was created, the office has registered 119 new sponsors and 166 new apprenticeship programs or occupations, bringing the total number of registered apprentices to 16,286 statewide.

Approved through the ATO, apprenticeship programs are used to provide employer-driven training to create a more productive, diverse, highly-skilled workforce for employers and help reduce employee turnover. The program provides job seekers with increased skills, and a nationally recognized credential to support future career advancement and increased wages.
