Governor Wolf, Senator Laughlin, Representative Fabrizio Announce Funding to Reopen Erie Recreational Icon JMC Ice Arena
July 19, 2018
Harrisburg, PA – Today, Governor Tom Wolf, Senator Dan Laughlin, and Representative Florindo Fabrizio announced the approval of $2 million to support renovations of a 50-year-old community icon in Erie, JMC Ice Arena.
“I am pleased to announce funding to support such an important community project for Erie,” said Governor Wolf. “The critical renovations of this historic ice arena will allow for the continuation of enjoyment and recreational opportunities for generations to come.”
Operated by the Erie Zoological Society, this project includes the renovation of the existing building and systems in order to make JMC Ice Arena operable again. RACP funding will support a new ice making system and new interior work, including a new ceiling, a new front entrance, and cosmetic work to locker rooms and the lobby, and new bleachers for guests. Additionally, this project includes the demolition and replacement of the current skate shop and ticket office, including the purchase of new rental skates.
“This is great news for the Erie community,” said Senator Laughlin. “Erie families enjoyed skating at the JMC Ice Arena for 50 years before leaks in its ice system forced it to close last year. Not only was the arena a great place to learn and practice ice-skating, it also created a spark in many that grew into a love of hockey. In fact, Erie Youth Hockey and the Westminster Figure Skating Club were founded there.”
“I’m gratified that we were able to secure the funding for this asset to the community,” said Representative Fabrizio. “As we all know, the lack of ice has been devastating to our hockey community. I’m glad that we were able to help JMC Ice Arena become fully functional again.”
Supported through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) program, funding will support critical expansion projects, some of which will provide opportunities for additional economic development.
