The EMD Electronics facility will be the world’s largest integrated specialty gases facility and will create nearly Pennsylvania 200 jobs. 

HARRISBURG, PA – Yesterday, Governor Josh Shapiro traveled to Schuylkill County and joined EMD Electronics to announce a $300 million investment in a semiconductor specialty gases manufacturing facility that will create nearly 200 jobs. The investment will build a new 96,500-square-foot facility – creating the world’s largest integrated specialty gases facility right here in Pennsylvania.

Under Governor Shapiro’s leadership, Pennsylvania is open for business and his Administration is focused on securing transformational economic development investments. The Governor’s budget proposal includes funding to attract and retain businesses as the Administration works to make Pennsylvania a national leader in innovation and job creation.

Associated Press: Chip component plant to get $300M expansion in Pennsylvania

The electronics subsidiary of German multinational health care company Merck KGaA said Wednesday it will spend $300 million to expand its specialty gas production facility in eastern Pennsylvania in a step that state officials hope will help boost the area’s appeal to the fast-growing semiconductor industry.

The subsidiary, EMD Electronics, said the expansion will create the world’s largest integrated specialty gases facility as part of its program to invest over $3.5 billion on projects by 2025, including at sites in Arizona, Texas and California. […]

Gov. Josh Shapiro, who attended the announcement at the site in Schuylkill County, pledged more than $1 million in state grants for the expansion.

“This industry is huge and its growth potential is enormous, and it is key to our economy and to our national security,” Shapiro told a news conference.

A semiconductor and electronics manufacturer is building a plant in Schuylkill County.

EMD Electronics held a groundbreaking ceremony at 357 Marian Ave. in Rush Township, Schuylkill County near Tamaqua with Gov. Josh Shapiro. The event was held at its existing site where the facility is being built.

“We appreciate the efforts on the part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to recognize the value of our growth plans and work with us to make this expansion possible.” Jeff White, president of EMD Electronics, said in a news release.

The project was coordinated by the Governor’s Action Team, a group of economic development professionals who report directly to the governor and work with businesses that are considering locating or expanding in Pennsylvania.

This expansion is part of the company’s growth program, which aims to invest more than $ 3.5 billion in innovation and capacity expansion projects by 2025.

Gov. Josh Shapiro and EMD Electronics announced Wednesday morning the groundbreaking for a $300 million project to build the largest integrated specialty gases facility of its kind in the world.

EMD Electronics will invest in the new facility near its headquarters at 357 Marian Ave. for specialty gases, which are a key component to semiconductor manufacturing.

Shapiro was joined by EMD President Jeff White and other company representatives as well as state and local officials at the 10 a.m. announcement.

As part of the ceremony, Shapiro announced that the state is awarding EMD a $1 million grant through the Pennsylvania First Grant Program to use toward the project. […]

The 96,500-square-foot expansion will make EMD Electronics the largest manufacturer of its kind in the world, Shapiro said.

The facilities will allow the company to double the production capacity of tungsten hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride, critical components in semiconductor manufacturing.

Shapiro, in a news release, said the state is committed to making Pennsylvania “a leader in innovation, job creation and economic development by helping to attract and retain businesses in the commonwealth.”

For the first time since 2018, a sitting governor visited Schuylkill County Wednesday, announcing the state’s $1.1 Million investment into the expansion of a Rush Township plant.

EMD Electronics, the successor to Air Products and Versum Materials, unveiled the $300 Million, 96,500-square-foot expansion at its plant on Marian Avenue near Hometown.

Company officials were joined by Governor Josh Shapiro and other state and local dignitaries, including State Senator David G. Argall, State Representative Jamie Barton, and Schuylkill County Commissioner Gary Hess.

WNEP: State invests $1.1 million in electronics plant near Hometown

Gov. Josh Shapiro expects a project at EMD Electronics in Rush Township to bring more than 100 jobs to the Hometown area.

“I believe in you. I believe in the workers here. I believe in the mission of your leadership here, and I believe because of investments like this, that we will be a leader amongst our peers,” said Gov. Shapiro to workers at EMD Electronics.
