Weekly Update: Continuing Budget Negotiations, Recognizing Job Creation, Joining Governors to Protect Health Care, Applauding Education to Combat the Opioid Epidemic, Supporting Bipartisan Inspector General Bill

On Monday, Governor Wolf announced that he would allow the bipartisan supported budget appropriations bill to become law without his signature. The governor encouraged the General Assembly to continue working with his administration to find sustainable revenue to fund the budget.

This week, CNBC recognized Pennsylvania for improvements in business development and education. Creating and encouraging job growth in the Commonwealth is a top priority for Governor Wolf. On Wednesday, he announced new manufacturing jobs coming to Luzerne County through a new location for Mickey Truck Bodies, Inc. On Thursday, the governor announced new jobs coming to the City of Erie with the expansion of Logistics Plus, Inc.

On Thursday, a revised version of the Senate Republican health care bill was released. Governor Wolf released a statement on his disappointment that Senate Republicans have ignored a group of bipartisan governors who had expressed their concern over coverage cuts that are included in the proposed health care bill.

Continuing the fight against the heroin and opioid epidemic is a priority for Governor Wolf and his administration. The governor joined officials from Clarion University on Tuesday to announce the university’s new Opioid Treatment Specialist Certificate program. Governor Wolf expressed that education is a powerful force in the fight against the epidemic and hoped that many would take advantage of the new educational program.

In the spirit of bipartisan compromise, Governor Wolf announced on Tuesday that he would sign Senate Bill 527. The bill codifies the Office of Inspector General and sets forth the duties of the office. The governor thanked Democratic and Republican members of the legislature for coming together to amend the bill to ensure that the Office of Inspector General serves the Commonwealth with efficiency and accountability.
