From the Wolf Family Recipe Box: A Traditional Apple Crisp

This recipe from Jim Fobel’s Old-Fashioned Baking Book: Recipes from an American Childhood is a dessert we have loved as a family for a very long time. We’re almost as excited to share this with you as we are to indulge in this dessert surrounded by friends and family over this holiday season. Enjoy!
Wolf Family Apple Crisp Recipe
5 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/2 inch slices
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp grated nutmeg
1/2 cup water
3/4 cup all purpose flour
8 tbsp (1 stick) butter, sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
heavy cream or vanilla ice cream (optional)
Toss apple slices with cinnamon and nutmeg. Turn into casserole and sprinkle with water. Combine flour, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Cut butter into it until the crumbs are the size of peas. Crumble over apples. Bake at 400 degrees for 40-45 minutes until golden brown. Serve with ice cream or heavy whipped cream if desired.
